About the Role
The Policy Research Associate (Energy Poverty) plays an integral role in furthering Efficiency Canada’s work on energy efficiency and energy poverty. This position involves supporting the Director of Action Research in executing energy poverty-related research projects and other initiatives, including organizing and facilitating workshops, delivering presentations, and collaborating with external stakeholders. As a member of the Policy Research Team at Efficiency Canada, the Policy Research Associate (Energy Poverty) will report to the Director of Research and play an integral role in informing organizational tactics and strategy to advance energy efficiency policy and programs for lower-income Canadians and Indigenous communities.
Reporting Structure
The Policy Research Associate (Energy Poverty) reports directly to the Director of Research at Efficiency Canada.

This position operates remotely.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate with the Director of Research and Director of Action Research to design, execute and deliver research reports, policy briefs, and other outputs to advance Efficiency Canada’s work in energy poverty
- Develop and maintain a network of provincial and municipal contacts to support Efficiency Canada’s work on energy poverty
- Assist in planning and participate in meetings with external partners in ongoing Efficiency Canada research and outreach initiatives
- Monitor developments in income-targeted or Indigenous energy efficiency programs and policy, and track/report internally using Efficiency Canada’s policy tracking system and in team meetings
- Manage projects independently, and adapt to complex and changing policy environments
- Participate in weekly internal policy team meetings, daily organizational check-ins, and periodic project or campaign-specific meetings
Key Requirements
- Education: University degree in public policy, political science, economics, law engineering, or a related field
- Experience: Experience in researching and analyzing energy efficiency policies and programs, specifically related to energy poverty
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in data analysis, visualization, and report writing; MS Office suite and/or Google Workspace
- Soft Skills: Strong communication, collaboration, and project management skills
- Additional Requirements: Bilingualism in English and French is a strong asset
Additional Requirements
- Excellent research, writing and communication skills, tailored to non-academic audiences.
- Strong background in policy research and analysis, acquired through working experience and/or a degree in public policy, political science, economics, environmental studies or engineering.
- Knowledge of national, provincial or municipal energy efficiency policy and/or programs, with a specific focus on energy affordability, equity, and poverty.
- Experience in working with diverse constituencies, facilitating groups, collaborating with external stakeholders, and delivering presentations.
- Intermediate skills in quantitative data analysis and visualization, and related software.
- Effective project management skills, and ability to work independently and in team settings.
