REPORT
Benchmarking 2021 Canadian province/territory and American state energy efficiency program savings and spendingThis is the third report released by Efficiency Canada comparing energy efficiency program savings and spending outcomes from the most recent Canadian and American Scorecards. Canadian provinces continue to lag leading American states in electricity savings, with no clear plans to improve with higher targets. Yet, ramping up energy efficiency program savings is an obvious way to help meet Canada’s Clean Electricity Regulations affordably by reducing customer energy bills.
🔑 Key insights:
-
Canadian median fossil fuel savings kept pace with American states and median program spending surpassed that seen in the US.
- Proposals to promote clean electricity should not forget that energy efficiency is a resource option that is readily available in Canadian provinces and territories.
- Leading states like Massachusetts, California, and Michigan introduced “all cost effective mandates”, “loading orders”, and “energy efficiency resource standards” that prioritize electricity savings as an alternative to supply.
