We recommend the federal government provide funding in the amount of $6.5 billion over four years to expand and reorient the Smart Renewables and Electrification
Program (SREPs) towards demand side energy solutions like energy efficiency. Authored by Brendan Haley.
This year’s federal budget must consider how to help Canadians with the rising cost of living while continuing to take action on climate change to achieve net-zero emissions and reduce fossil fuel use, especially given our economy’s vulnerability to future price increases. Energy efficiency is a way to make progress on both affordability and climate objectives. Authored by Kirk Johnson, Abhilash Kantamneni, and Brendan Haley.
To achieve net-zero emission goals, this budget must strategically dedicate resources to prepare for a significant scale-up in energy efficiency. Canada lags other nations in the efficient use of energy resources. A recent International Energy Agency analysis showed that Canada has the highest energy intensity measured by total final consumption per unit of GDP amongst all member countries. However, this suggests there is significant potential to cut energy costs, improve productivity, and reduce emissions.
The multiple benefits of energy efficiency can help Canada manage both demand and supply shocks from COVID-19 while improving the operation of our buildings to reduce virus transmission.
